With more than 30 years of personal training experience, Barry Broutman has dedicated his career to helping individuals achieve their health and fitness goals.
His remarkable journey began in the late 1990s when he spent two years volunteering at the UIC Human Performance Lab, gaining valuable insights into exercise science and human physiology. Since then, Barry has worked with a diverse range of clients, offering customized training programs tailored to individual needs and goals.
Throughout his career, Barry has been a leader in corporate wellness, designing and leading programs for companies such as United Airlines, Fort Dearborn Printing, The Presidents Council, and various law firms. His expertise has empowered professionals to incorporate fitness into their busy lives, enhancing both their physical well-being and productivity.
In his early years as a trainer, Barry specialized in pre/post-natal training, weight loss, and strength training. Today, his focus has shifted to older adult training, where he applies his expertise in Bonefit training, balance, fall prevention, core stability, and strength training. His commitment has helped countless clients maintain their independence, confidence, and overall health.
"When clients tell me that they have achieved their health/fitness goals, that is the greatest feeling in the world to me," he says. "There's nothing like it."
Barry believes in a highly personalized approach to fitness. "No two people are exactly the same, why should your fitness program be like everyone else?"
Every training program begins with a thorough evaluation to identify individual needs, potential weak links, and areas that require attention, including posture, balance, and small muscle groups. This customized--or bespoke--approach ensures that each client receives an optimal training experience to help them reach individual goals safely and efficiently.
His dedication to long-term client relationships is evident—many of Barry’s clients have been training with him for more than 20 years. He understands that personal training is not just about exercise but about enhancing one’s quality of life. "Getting in shape or improving your overall health is only the starting point of personal training. How you choose to use your fitness in life--what I call the Application of Fitness--is what really matters."
Barry holds multiple certifications, including ACE, NASM, NSCA-CPT, NASM Corrective Exercise Specialist, Senior Fitness Specialist, and Bonefit certification. His extensive knowledge and experience make him a trusted expert in the field of personal training.
"The ability to lift heavy objects on your own, go for a walk without the fear of falling, compete in a race or play a sport, or accomplish more physical work because some part of your body doesn’t hurt you anymore—these are just some of the benefits that training can give you. And they are invaluable—at any age."
Outside of his work, Barry remains active and engaged in his interests and passions. He competed in the Steelhead Triathlon as part of a three-person team with his clients. He also enjoys cycling and exploring the world with his wife, embracing new cultures, foods, and experiences. Whether traveling with old friends or making new ones along the way, Barry approaches life with the same enthusiasm and dedication that he brings to his training.
At Chicago Personal Training, Barry Broutman is committed to helping clients move better, feel stronger, and live richer lives by living healthier lives.
